It's much earlier in the game than the water purifier was in Fallout 3, but the reputation system makes it so that your choices have a much bigger impact on how people react to you in New Vegas. I would suggest you save here and begin exploring. You will eventually reach a point where all three of the main factions reach out to you at roughly the same time. Spoiler free example: by the time I reached the point of no return while helping out Caesar's Legion, I was vilified by the NCR, thereby making it much more difficult to explore, quest, trade etc. It's true that you get a warning before heading into the point of no return, but by that time, you're probably not going to be in an ideal standing to go out and fully explore the wasteland.

As the game is like Fallout 3 before patching (Fallout 3 vanilla?), the strict end kinda bugs me and I would love to explore the game as much as possible, before letting the ending give the judgement for my character (if there is one). I mean, I would love to hear a good stopping stuggestion point to scour and explore the wasteland, before finishing the main story and getting to see the ending.
